Computer Hardware Overview

Computer hardware consists of physical components of a computer that can be touched and seen. It works together to input, process, store, and output data.

1. Central Processing Unit (CPU)

  • Known as the brain of the computer.

  • Performs arithmetic, logic, and control operations.

  • Main components:

    • ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit): Performs calculations and logical operations.

    • CU (Control Unit): Directs data flow between components.

    • Registers: Temporary storage for quick data access.

2. Memory

  • Stores data and instructions for processing.

  • Types:

    • RAM (Random Access Memory): Temporary memory for running programs.

    • ROM (Read-Only Memory): Permanent memory storing essential instructions.

    • Cache: High-speed memory for frequently used data.

    • Secondary storage: Hard drives, SSDs, optical discs.

3. Input Devices

  • Devices that allow users to enter data.

  • Examples: Keyboard, Mouse, Scanner, Microphone, Touchscreen.

4. Output Devices

  • Devices that display or produce processed results.

  • Examples: Monitor, Printer, Speakers, Projector.

5. Storage Devices

  • Long-term storage for data and programs.

  • Examples: HDD, SSD, USB drives, Optical discs, Magnetic tapes.

6. Motherboard

  • Main circuit board connecting CPU, memory, and peripherals.

  • Facilitates communication between all hardware components.

7. Power Supply Unit (PSU)

  • Converts AC electricity to DC for computer components.

  • Provides stable and regulated power.

8. Peripheral Devices

  • External devices connected to the computer for additional functionality.

  • Examples: Printers, External drives, Scanners, Webcams.

Key Points

  • Hardware is the physical part of a computer; software is the instructions that run on it.

  • Essential hardware includes CPU, memory, input/output devices, and storage.

  • Proper hardware selection affects computer performance, speed, and capability.
