Resistance in Series

Find equivalent resistance when resistors are connected in series.

Rₛ = R₁ + R₂ + R₃ + …

Formula Explanation

In series the same current flows through each resistor.

Variables Explained

R₁, R₂… = individual resistances.

Solved Example

Three resistors 2 Ω, 3 Ω and 5 Ω in series. Equivalent resistance?
2 + 3 + 5 = 10 Ω.

Exam Tip

Series resistance is always greater than the largest individual resistance.
