Work Done

Calculate work done by a constant force.

W = F × s × cos(θ)

Formula Explanation

Work depends on the force, displacement and angle between them.

Variables Explained

W = Work in joules; F = Force in newtons; s = Displacement in metres; θ = Angle between force and displacement.

Solved Example

A 10 N force moves an object 5 m in the force direction. Find work.
W = 10 × 5 × cos(0°) = 50 J.

Exam Tip

When force and displacement are perpendicular, work is zero.
