Heat Energy

Calculate heat transferred for a temperature change.

Q = mcΔT

Formula Explanation

For a substance with approximately constant specific heat capacity, heat transfer is mass multiplied by specific heat capacity and temperature change.

Variables Explained

Q = Heat energy; m = Mass; c = Specific heat capacity; ΔT = Temperature change.

Solved Example

Heat 2 kg of water by 5°C using c = 4200 J/(kg·°C).
Q = 2 × 4200 × 5 = 42000 J.

Exam Tip

Check whether a phase change is involved; latent heat then needs separate treatment.
