Chemistry

Reaction Rate

Calculate average reaction rate from concentration change.

Average Rate = -Δ[Reactant]/Δt = Δ[Product]/Δt

Formula Explanation

Reactant concentration decreases while product concentration increases. Stoichiometric coefficients must be considered for a normalized reaction rate.

Variables Explained

Δ[ ] = Change in concentration; Δt = Time interval.

Solved Example

A reactant concentration falls from 0.8 to 0.2 mol/L in 3 seconds.
Average disappearance rate = -(0.2 - 0.8)/3 = 0.2 mol/(L·s).

Exam Tip

For a normalized reaction rate, divide by the relevant stoichiometric coefficient.
