Ideal Gas Equation

Relate pressure, volume, amount and temperature of an ideal gas.

P × V = n × R × T

Formula Explanation

The ideal gas equation relates a gas sample state under the ideal gas model.

Variables Explained

P = Pressure; V = Volume; n = Moles; R = Gas constant; T = Absolute temperature in kelvin.

Solved Example

Find the volume of 1 mol ideal gas at 300 K and 1 atm using R = 0.0821 L·atm/(mol·K).
V = nRT/P = (1 × 0.0821 × 300)/1 = 24.63 L approximately.

Exam Tip

Temperature must be in kelvin and units must match the gas constant.
