Mars is often called the Red Planet because of the large amount of iron oxide (rust) on its surface. This iron-rich dust gives Mars its distinct reddish appearance when seen from space. The planet’s soil and rocks contain iron that has reacted with oxygen, creating rust over millions of years. Mars has a thin atmosphere and a cold, dry environment, which helps preserve this rusty surface. Its unique color and similarity to Earth in some ways make Mars one of the most studied planets in our Solar System, especially in the search for past or present life.
