The development of computers is divided into different generations based mainly on the major electronic technology used in computers. Each generation brought improvements in speed, size, reliability, storage capacity, programming languages and cost.

The commonly accepted classification consists of five generations of computers:

1. First Generation of Computers

Main Technology

Vacuum Tubes

Vacuum tubes were used for electronic switching and processing.

Major Features

  • Very large in size
