यह नोट्स Bihar STET Biology की तैयारी के लिए Ecology और Environment के महत्वपूर्ण concepts को सरल भाषा में कवर करते हैं। इसमें Ecosystem, Food Chain, Food Web, Ecological Pyramids, Population, Community, Biodiversity, Conservation, Pollution, Climate Change और Environmental Issues जैसे महत्वपूर्ण topics शामिल हैं।


1. Ecology क्या है?

Ecology (पारिस्थितिकी) जीवों और उनके पर्यावरण के बीच पारस्परिक संबंधों का वैज्ञानिक अध्ययन है।

Ecology शब्द का प्रयोग Ernst Haeckel ने 1866 में किया था।

Environment के दो प्रमुख घटक

  1. Biotic Components – जैविक घटक

    • Plants

    • Animals

    • Microorganisms

    • Humans

  2. Abiotic Components – अजैविक घटक

    • प्रकाश

    • तापमान

    • जल

    • वायु

    • मिट्टी

    • खनिज

    • pH

    • आर्द्रता


2. Ecological Organization – पारिस्थितिक संगठन

Ecology में संगठन का क्रम सामान्यतः इस प्रकार समझा जाता है:

Organism → Population → Community → Ecosystem → Biome → Biosphere

Organism

किसी species का एक individual organism कहलाता है।

Population

एक ही species के ऐसे individuals का समूह जो किसी निश्चित क्षेत्र में रहते और आपस में प्रजनन कर सकते हैं, population कहलाता है।

Community

एक क्षेत्र में रहने वाली विभिन्न populations का समूह community कहलाता है।

Ecosystem

जीवित organisms और उनके abiotic environment के बीच interactions से ecosystem बनता है।

Biome

बहुत बड़े भौगोलिक क्षेत्र में पाए जाने वाले प्रमुख ecosystems का व्यापक ecological region biome कहलाता है।

Biosphere

पृथ्वी का वह भाग जहाँ जीवन पाया जाता है, biosphere कहलाता है।


3. Habitat और Niche

Habitat

किसी organism का रहने का प्राकृतिक स्थान उसका habitat कहलाता है।

उदाहरण:

  • Fish → aquatic habitat

  • Camel → desert habitat

  • Tiger → forest habitat

Ecological Niche

किसी organism की ecosystem में भूमिका, संसाधनों का उपयोग और अन्य organisms के साथ उसका संबंध उसके ecological niche से संबंधित है।

Niche = Organism ecosystem में क्या भूमिका निभाता है?


4. Population – जनसंख्या

Population किसी निश्चित क्षेत्र में रहने वाली एक species के individuals का समूह है।

Population के प्रमुख Attributes

1. Population Density

किसी क्षेत्र या आयतन में organisms की संख्या/biomass आदि population density को दर्शा सकती है।

2. Natality

Population में births की दर को natality कहते हैं।

3. Mortality

Population में deaths की दर mortality कहलाती है।

4. Immigration

दूसरे क्षेत्र से individuals का population में आना।

5. Emigration

Population से individuals का बाहर जाना।

Population Change

Population में परिवर्तन मुख्यतः:

Natality + Immigration – Mortality – Emigration

से प्रभावित होता है।


5. Population Growth

Population growth दो प्रमुख प्रकार के models से समझी जाती है:

A. Exponential Growth

जब resources पर्याप्त मात्रा में उपलब्ध हों और population तेजी से बढ़े तो exponential growth हो सकती है।

Equation:

dN/dt = rN

जहाँ:

  • N = Population size

  • r = Intrinsic rate of natural increase

इसका graph सामान्यतः J-shaped होता है।


B. Logistic Growth

जब resources सीमित हों और environmental resistance बढ़े तो population logistic growth प्रदर्शित कर सकती है।

Equation:

dN/dt = rN (K-N)/K

जहाँ:

  • K = Carrying Capacity

  • N = Population size

  • r = Intrinsic rate

इसका graph सामान्यतः S-shaped होता है।

Carrying Capacity

किसी environment द्वारा लंबे समय तक support की जा सकने वाली population की अधिकतम सीमा को carrying capacity कहते हैं।


6. Population Interactions

विभिन्न species के organisms एक-दूसरे के साथ अलग-अलग प्रकार के interactions करते हैं।

मुख्य interactions:

  • Mutualism

  • Competition

  • Predation

  • Parasitism

  • Commensalism

  • Amensalism


7. Mutualism

जब दोनों species को लाभ होता है तो इसे Mutualism (+/+) कहते हैं।

उदाहरण:

Lichen = Alga + Fungus

दोनों एक-दूसरे को लाभ पहुँचाते हैं।

एक अन्य उदाहरण:

Mycorrhiza

यह plant roots और fungi के बीच mutualistic association है।


8. Competition

जब दो organisms समान सीमित resources के लिए प्रतिस्पर्धा करते हैं, तो competition होता है।

यह:

(-/-) interaction है।

उदाहरण:

  • Plants competing for sunlight

  • Animals competing for food

Competitive Exclusion Principle

Gause के प्रयोगों से यह विचार विकसित हुआ कि दो species जो बिल्कुल समान limiting resources के लिए प्रतिस्पर्धा करती हैं, लंबे समय तक एक ही niche में coexist नहीं कर सकतीं, यदि कोई अन्य mechanism उन्हें अलग न करे।


9. Predation

जब एक organism दूसरे organism को पकड़कर खाता है तो इसे predation कहते हैं।

Predator → (+)

Prey → (-)

उदाहरण:

Tiger → Deer

Predators ecosystem में prey populations को नियंत्रित करने और community structure को प्रभावित करने में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाते हैं।


10. Parasitism

जब parasite किसी host से भोजन प्राप्त करता है और host को नुकसान पहुँचाता है, तो इसे parasitism कहते हैं।

Parasite → (+)

Host → (-)

उदाहरण:

  • Tapeworm → Human

  • Plasmodium → Human

  • Cuscuta → Host plant


11. Commensalism

जब एक species को लाभ होता है और दूसरी species पर कोई महत्वपूर्ण प्रभाव नहीं पड़ता, तो इसे commensalism कहते हैं।

उदाहरण:

Orchid का tree पर epiphytic growth.

Tree को सामान्यतः orchid से प्रत्यक्ष लाभ या हानि नहीं होती, जबकि orchid को support और बेहतर प्रकाश मिल सकता है।


12. Amensalism

एक species को नुकसान और दूसरी पर कोई महत्वपूर्ण प्रभाव नहीं।

उदाहरण के रूप में कुछ microorganisms द्वारा ऐसे chemicals बनाना लिया जा सकता है जो दूसरी species की growth को रोकते हैं।


13. Ecosystem

Ecosystem = Biotic Components + Abiotic Components + उनके Interactions

Ecosystem के दो मुख्य components हैं:

1. Abiotic Components

  • Water

  • Air

  • Soil

  • Temperature

  • Light

  • Minerals

2. Biotic Components

  • Producers

  • Consumers

  • Decomposers


14. Producers

जो organisms inorganic substances से अपना food बनाते हैं, producers कहलाते हैं।

मुख्य उदाहरण:

  • Green plants

  • Algae

  • कुछ photosynthetic bacteria

Photosynthesis:

CO₂ + H₂O + Light → Organic Food + O₂


15. Consumers

जो organisms अपना भोजन स्वयं नहीं बना सकते और अन्य organisms पर निर्भर होते हैं, consumers कहलाते हैं।

Primary Consumers

मुख्यतः herbivores.

उदाहरण:

  • Deer

  • Cow

  • Grasshopper

Secondary Consumers

Primary consumers को खाने वाले organisms.

Tertiary Consumers

Higher-level consumers.

उदाहरण:

Grass → Grasshopper → Frog → Snake → Hawk


16. Decomposers

Dead plants और animals के organic matter को सरल पदार्थों में तोड़ने वाले organisms decomposers कहलाते हैं।

मुख्य decomposers:

  • Bacteria

  • Fungi

Decomposition ecosystem में nutrients को वापस environment में उपलब्ध कराने में महत्वपूर्ण है।


17. Detritivores

जो organisms dead organic matter यानी detritus को खाते हैं, उन्हें detritivores कहते हैं।

उदाहरण:

  • Earthworm

Decomposers vs Detritivores

Detritivore → Dead organic matter को ingest करता है।

Decomposer → Enzymes द्वारा organic matter को chemically break down करता है।


18. Food Chain

एक organism से दूसरे organism तक food और energy के transfer का क्रम food chain कहलाता है।

उदाहरण:

Grass → Grasshopper → Frog → Snake → Eagle

Food chain में प्रत्येक चरण को Trophic Level कहते हैं।


19. Trophic Levels

पहला trophic level

Producers

दूसरा trophic level

Primary Consumers

तीसरा trophic level

Secondary Consumers

चौथा trophic level

Tertiary Consumers


20. Food Chain के प्रकार

Grazing Food Chain

यह producers से शुरू होती है।

उदाहरण:

Grass → Deer → Tiger

Detritus Food Chain

यह dead organic matter यानी detritus से शुरू होती है।

उदाहरण:

Dead leaves → Earthworm → Bird


21. Food Web

जब कई food chains आपस में जुड़ जाती हैं, तो food web बनता है।

Food web ecosystem को अधिक complex और interconnected बनाता है।


22. Energy Flow in Ecosystem

Ecosystem में energy का मुख्य स्रोत Sun है।

Energy flow:

Sun → Producers → Consumers → Decomposers

Energy flow की महत्वपूर्ण विशेषताएँ:

  • Energy का flow एक दिशा में होता है।

  • Energy का बार-बार recycling नहीं होता।

  • प्रत्येक trophic level पर energy का कुछ भाग heat के रूप में dissipate होता है।


23. 10% Law

Lindeman के trophic-level concept के अनुसार, सामान्यतः एक trophic level की energy का लगभग 10% अगले trophic level तक transfer होता है।

उदाहरण:

यदि producers के पास:

10,000 J

तो primary consumers को लगभग:

1,000 J

और secondary consumers को लगभग:

100 J

मिल सकता है।

यह एक ecological approximation है, हर ecosystem में exact value नहीं होती।


24. Ecological Pyramids

Ecological pyramids trophic levels के quantitative relationships को दर्शाते हैं।

मुख्य प्रकार:

  1. Pyramid of Number

  2. Pyramid of Biomass

  3. Pyramid of Energy


25. Pyramid of Number

प्रत्येक trophic level पर organisms की संख्या दर्शाता है।

इसका shape:

  • Upright हो सकता है

  • Inverted हो सकता है

उदाहरण:

Tree ecosystem में एक tree पर कई insects हो सकते हैं, इसलिए pyramid inverted हो सकता है।


26. Pyramid of Biomass

प्रत्येक trophic level की total biomass को दर्शाता है।

Terrestrial ecosystems में यह सामान्यतः upright होता है।

कुछ aquatic ecosystems में biomass pyramid inverted हो सकता है क्योंकि phytoplankton की standing biomass कम लेकिन turnover तेज होता है।


27. Pyramid of Energy

प्रत्येक trophic level पर available energy को दर्शाता है।

Energy pyramid हमेशा upright होती है।

इसका कारण energy का प्रत्येक trophic level पर heat के रूप में loss होना है।


28. Productivity

Ecosystem में organic matter के production की दर को productivity कहते हैं।

Gross Primary Productivity – GPP

Producers द्वारा photosynthesis के माध्यम से total organic matter/energy fixation की दर।

Net Primary Productivity – NPP

Plants के respiration के बाद बची हुई productivity।

Formula:

NPP = GPP – R

जहाँ:

R = Respiration

NPP herbivores और अन्य consumers के लिए available biomass का प्रमुख आधार है।


29. Secondary Productivity

Consumers द्वारा नए organic matter/biomass के production की दर को secondary productivity कहते हैं।


30. Decomposition

Dead organic matter का breakdown decomposition कहलाता है।

मुख्य steps:

  1. Fragmentation

  2. Leaching

  3. Catabolism

  4. Humification

  5. Mineralisation

Fragmentation

Detritivores dead matter को छोटे fragments में बदलते हैं।

Leaching

Water soluble substances soil में नीचे चले जाते हैं।

Catabolism

Microbial enzymes complex organic substances को सरल substances में तोड़ते हैं।

Humification

Humus बनने की प्रक्रिया।

Mineralisation

Organic nutrients का inorganic forms में release होना।


31. Nutrient Cycles

Ecosystem में nutrients का environment और organisms के बीच लगातार circulation nutrient cycling कहलाता है।

मुख्य cycles:

  • Carbon Cycle

  • Nitrogen Cycle

  • Phosphorus Cycle

  • Water Cycle


32. Carbon Cycle

Atmospheric carbon मुख्यतः CO₂ के रूप में पाया जाता है।

Photosynthesis:

CO₂ → Organic compounds

Respiration और decomposition:

Organic compounds → CO₂

Fossil fuel combustion भी atmospheric CO₂ बढ़ा सकता है।


33. Nitrogen Cycle

Nitrogen atmosphere में मुख्यतः N₂ के रूप में पाया जाता है।

मुख्य processes:

  • Nitrogen fixation

  • Ammonification

  • Nitrification

  • Denitrification

Nitrogen Fixation

Atmospheric nitrogen को biologically usable compounds में बदलने की प्रक्रिया।

उदाहरण:

Rhizobium bacteria leguminous plants की root nodules में nitrogen fixation में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाते हैं।


34. Phosphorus Cycle

Phosphorus मुख्यतः rocks और soil में पाया जाता है।

Phosphorus cycle में atmosphere की भूमिका nitrogen cycle की तुलना में बहुत कम होती है।

Phosphorus plants के लिए महत्वपूर्ण है क्योंकि यह:

  • ATP

  • Nucleic acids

  • Phospholipids

का महत्वपूर्ण component है।


35. Ecological Succession

किसी क्षेत्र में community structure में समय के साथ होने वाले क्रमिक और directional changes को ecological succession कहते हैं।

Primary Succession

ऐसे स्थान से शुरू होती है जहाँ पहले soil या established community नहीं होती।

उदाहरण:

Bare rock.

Secondary Succession

ऐसे क्षेत्र में होती है जहाँ पहले community मौजूद थी लेकिन disturbance के बाद कुछ soil/organisms मौजूद रह सकते हैं।

उदाहरण:

Fire या cultivation के बाद ecosystem का पुनर्विकास।


36. Biodiversity

किसी क्षेत्र में जीवों की विविधता को biodiversity कहते हैं।

Biodiversity को तीन प्रमुख स्तरों पर समझा जाता है:

  1. Genetic Diversity

  2. Species Diversity

  3. Ecosystem Diversity


37. Genetic Diversity

एक ही species के individuals के genes में पाई जाने वाली variation genetic diversity कहलाती है।

उदाहरण:

Rice की अलग-अलग varieties.


38. Species Diversity

किसी क्षेत्र में species की variety और relative abundance species diversity से संबंधित है।


39. Ecosystem Diversity

किसी क्षेत्र में विभिन्न प्रकार के ecosystems की विविधता।

उदाहरण:

  • Forest

  • Grassland

  • Wetland

  • Desert

  • Marine ecosystem


40. Biodiversity के महत्व

Biodiversity ecosystem को कई महत्वपूर्ण services प्रदान करती है।

प्रमुख ecosystem services

  • Food

  • Medicines

  • Pollination

  • Soil formation

  • Nutrient cycling

  • Climate regulation

  • Oxygen production

  • Carbon fixation

  • Water regulation


41. Biodiversity Loss

Biodiversity loss के प्रमुख कारण:

  1. Habitat loss

  2. Over-exploitation

  3. Alien species invasion

  4. Co-extinctions

NCERT में इन्हें biodiversity loss के प्रमुख drivers के रूप में विशेष महत्व दिया गया है।


42. Habitat Loss

Natural habitat का destruction biodiversity loss का सबसे महत्वपूर्ण कारणों में से एक है।

कारण:

  • Deforestation

  • Urbanisation

  • Agriculture

  • Mining

  • Infrastructure development

Habitat fragmentation भी wildlife populations को प्रभावित कर सकता है।


43. Over-exploitation

किसी biological resource का अत्यधिक उपयोग population को तेजी से कम कर सकता है।

उदाहरण:

  • Excessive hunting

  • Overfishing

  • Excessive collection of medicinal plants


44. Alien Species Invasion

किसी नए क्षेत्र में बाहरी species का प्रवेश native species को प्रभावित कर सकता है।

उदाहरण:

  • Water hyacinth (Eichhornia)

  • Lantana

  • Parthenium


45. Co-extinction

जब एक species के extinction के कारण उससे closely associated दूसरी species भी extinction की ओर जाती है, तो इसे co-extinction कहा जाता है।

उदाहरण:

एक host species के समाप्त होने पर उस पर निर्भर parasite भी समाप्त हो सकता है।


46. Extinction

किसी species के सभी individuals का समाप्त हो जाना extinction कहलाता है।

Extinction के प्रकार

  • Natural extinction

  • Human-induced extinction

Habitat destruction, over-exploitation और invasive species human-induced biodiversity loss में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाते हैं।


47. Endangered Species

ऐसी species जिनकी population बहुत कम हो गई है और जिनके extinction का risk अधिक है, endangered species कहलाती हैं।

Species की conservation status के लिए IUCN Red List एक प्रमुख वैश्विक reference है।


48. Biodiversity Hotspots

ऐसे क्षेत्र जहाँ:

  • बहुत अधिक endemic species हों

  • और habitat loss का गंभीर खतरा हो

उन्हें biodiversity hotspots कहा जाता है।

Hotspot concept को Norman Myers और सहयोगियों के कार्य से व्यापक पहचान मिली।

भारत के कुछ भाग biodiversity hotspots से संबंधित हैं:

  • Himalaya

  • Indo-Burma

  • Western Ghats-Sri Lanka

भारत के Nicobar Islands का एक हिस्सा Sundaland hotspot से संबंधित है।


49. Endemic Species

जो species किसी विशेष geographic region में naturally पाई जाती है और सामान्यतः उसी क्षेत्र तक सीमित होती है, endemic species कहलाती है।


50. Biodiversity Conservation

Biodiversity conservation के दो मुख्य तरीके:

1. In-situ Conservation

Species को उसके natural habitat में conserve करना।

उदाहरण:

  • National Parks

  • Wildlife Sanctuaries

  • Biosphere Reserves

2. Ex-situ Conservation

Species को उसके natural habitat के बाहर conserve करना।

उदाहरण:

  • Zoos

  • Botanical gardens

  • Seed banks

  • Gene banks


51. National Park

National Parks में wildlife और उनके habitats को उच्च स्तर की कानूनी सुरक्षा दी जाती है।


52. Wildlife Sanctuary

Wildlife sanctuaries में wild animals और उनके habitats का संरक्षण किया जाता है; human activities पर restrictions क्षेत्र के नियमों के अनुसार होती हैं।


53. Biosphere Reserve

Biosphere reserves बड़े क्षेत्रों में biodiversity conservation और sustainable use के लिए महत्वपूर्ण हैं।

इनमें सामान्यतः:

  • Core zone

  • Buffer zone

  • Transition zone

जैसे functional areas समझे जाते हैं।


54. Red Data Book

Threatened species की जानकारी के लिए Red Data Book/Red Lists का उपयोग किया जाता है।

आज global conservation status के संदर्भ में IUCN Red List विशेष रूप से महत्वपूर्ण है।


55. Environmental Pollution

Environment में harmful substances या pollutants की ऐसी मात्रा में उपस्थिति जो organisms और ecosystems को नुकसान पहुँचा सकती है, pollution कहलाती है।

मुख्य प्रकार:

  • Air pollution

  • Water pollution

  • Soil pollution

  • Noise pollution

  • Radioactive pollution


56. Air Pollution

वायु में harmful gases, particles या biological pollutants की undesirable concentration air pollution पैदा कर सकती है।

प्रमुख air pollutants

  • Particulate matter

  • SO₂

  • NOx

  • CO

  • O₃

  • CO₂

  • Lead और अन्य toxic substances


57. Particulate Matter

वायु में suspended छोटे solid या liquid particles को particulate matter कहते हैं।

PM₂.₅ और PM₁₀ air-quality discussions में महत्वपूर्ण categories हैं।

PM₂.₅ बहुत छोटे particles होते हैं जो respiratory system में गहराई तक पहुँच सकते हैं।


58. Smog

Smoke और fog जैसे शब्दों से बना term smog है।

Photochemical smog में sunlight के प्रभाव से nitrogen oxides और hydrocarbons/VOCs के reactions से secondary pollutants बनते हैं।

PAN (Peroxyacetyl Nitrate) photochemical smog का एक महत्वपूर्ण component है।


59. Acid Rain

मुख्यतः:

SO₂ + NOx

से बने acidic compounds precipitation के माध्यम से वातावरण से नीचे आ सकते हैं।

Acid rain:

  • Soil को प्रभावित कर सकती है

  • Water bodies को acidify कर सकती है

  • Buildings/monuments को नुकसान पहुँचा सकती है

  • Vegetation को प्रभावित कर सकती है


60. Water Pollution

Water में harmful substances के कारण water quality खराब होना water pollution कहलाता है।

मुख्य sources:

  • Domestic sewage

  • Industrial waste

  • Agricultural runoff

  • Oil spills

  • Plastic waste


61. Eutrophication

Water bodies में excessive nutrients, विशेषकर nitrogen और phosphorus compounds, के जमा होने से excessive algal growth हो सकती है।

इसे eutrophication कहते हैं।

इसके परिणाम:

Nutrient enrichment → Algal bloom → Decomposition → Oxygen depletion → Aquatic organisms पर adverse effects


62. Biological Oxygen Demand – BOD

Water में biodegradable organic matter को microorganisms द्वारा decompose करने के लिए आवश्यक dissolved oxygen की मात्रा को BOD से measure किया जाता है।

सामान्यतः:

Higher organic pollution → Higher BOD


63. Biomagnification

Food chain के successive trophic levels पर कुछ persistent, non-biodegradable pollutants की concentration बढ़ सकती है।

इसे biomagnification कहते हैं।

उदाहरण:

Water → Plankton → Fish → Fish-eating birds

DDT biomagnification का classic textbook example है।


64. Solid Waste

Solid waste में शामिल हो सकते हैं:

  • Plastic

  • Paper

  • Glass

  • Metal

  • Food waste

  • Electronic waste

Waste Management के महत्वपूर्ण principles

Reduce → Reuse → Recycle

इसके साथ segregation, composting और scientific disposal भी महत्वपूर्ण हैं।


65. E-Waste

Electronic products से उत्पन्न waste को e-waste कहते हैं।

उदाहरण:

  • Computers

  • Mobile phones

  • Printers

  • Batteries

  • Electronic components

इसमें toxic metals और chemicals हो सकते हैं, इसलिए proper recycling और disposal आवश्यक है।


66. Greenhouse Effect

Atmosphere में कुछ gases पृथ्वी द्वारा emitted infrared radiation को absorb/re-emit करके heat retention में योगदान करती हैं।

इसे greenhouse effect कहते हैं।

मुख्य greenhouse gases:

  • CO₂

  • CH₄

  • N₂O

  • Water vapour

  • Ozone

कुछ industrial gases भी greenhouse effect में योगदान करती हैं।


67. Global Warming

मानवीय गतिविधियों से greenhouse gases की atmospheric concentration बढ़ने के कारण पृथ्वी के औसत surface temperature में दीर्घकालिक वृद्धि को global warming कहा जाता है।

मुख्य human-related sources:

  • Fossil fuel combustion

  • Deforestation

  • Industrial activities

  • Agriculture

  • Land-use change


68. Climate Change

Climate change global warming से व्यापक concept है।

इसमें लंबे समय के climate patterns में बदलाव शामिल हैं।

उदाहरण:

  • Temperature changes

  • Rainfall pattern changes

  • Sea-level rise

  • Changes in extreme weather patterns


69. Ozone Layer

Ozone layer मुख्यतः stratosphere में पाई जाती है।

Ozone:

O₃

है।

यह सूर्य की harmful ultraviolet radiation, विशेषकर UV-B, से पृथ्वी पर जीवन की रक्षा में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाती है।


70. Ozone Depletion
