Amdahl Law

Estimate speedup from parallel processing.

Speedup = 1 / [(1 - P) + P/S]

Formula Explanation

Amdahl law models the limit on overall speedup when only part of a task can be parallelized.

Variables Explained

P = Parallelizable fraction; S = Speedup of the parallel portion.

Solved Example

If 80% of a program is parallelizable and that part becomes 4 times faster, find total speedup.
Speedup = 1 / [0.2 + 0.8/4] = 1/0.4 = 2.5.

Exam Tip

The serial portion limits total speedup.
