Human stomach में बहुत तेज़ अम्ल (acid) होता है जो भोजन को पचाने में मदद करता है, लेकिन यह इतना शक्तिशाली होता है कि अपने ही ऊतकों को नुकसान पहुँचा सकता है। इससे बचाव के लिए पेट की अंदरूनी परत लगातार बदलती रहती है। लगभग हर 3–4 दिनों में इसकी नई सुरक्षात्मक परत बन जाती है। यह परत म्यूकस और बाइकार्बोनेट नामक पदार्थों से बनी होती है, जो पेट की दीवार और अम्ल के बीच एक सुरक्षा कवच का काम करती है, जिससे पेट खुद को नुकसान पहुँचाए बिना भोजन पचा पाता है।
